Family Game NightIt’s a well accepted idea that families that spend time together are more connected. That’s why so many families have turned to a family game night. This is one night out of every week that everyone in the family agrees to meet at the house to spend some time together. For some families, this means dusting off the DVD collection and enjoying a film together, and for other families it means rediscovering all those board games for children that usually sit unused in the closet.

For an added benefit, choose educational games for kids as the centerpiece of your game night. This doesn’t have to be something overt, otherwise you risk alienating your kids. But it can be something interactive and fun that still stretches the mental muscles. Even games like Scattergories can be raucous, creative, and fun, but they definitely offer some real educational value in their ability to foster creative thinking. For added creative value, let your kid develop their own game that everyone can play!

boardgameWhen work is tedious or the worker has no sense of accomplishment, it becomes boring, however, if the work is satisfying and the rewards are tangible, it can be just as fun as play. The truth is, work in essence is play, because play often involves work. Whether it’s beating the final boss on a computer game, winning a match of basketball, or figuring out that Sudoku puzzle that’s been plaguing you all day, the satisfaction from play comes with investing effort and being rewarded. Investing effort bears the connotation of work, and thus, work creates the same experiences we identify as play.

Applying the work = play model to children is an essential function of parenting.  Parents can help their children to learn by providing them with educational toys. Though a child might protest to solving a puzzle as opposed to watching their favorite cartoon, when it’s done, they’ll have a much greater sense of accomplishment from the puzzle and want to do it again. And while they may not seem educational at first blush, childrens board games aid in the development of math and reading skills.

familyPlaying is fun for children. Parents often watch as their kids play joyfully either outdoors or with toys and games made for indoor play. But did you know that as your kids play, they are learning at the same time? That is why parents should encourage toy manufacturers to make games educational.

Through social play, children learn the rudiments of problem solving and getting along with others. It enhances leadership skills and personality development. Some toys also teach kids to read and write. This, along with the other elements of playing can lead to school success. Games do not need to be overtly educational to have a positive effect. The basic Monopoly board game, for example, can help teach children about investments, money management and fiscal responsibility.

the very hungry caterpillarWe all know how boring it can be when you are cooped up inside on a rainy day. These days are especially hard on kids, who would rather be playing outside with their friends. Every parent should get together a rainy day game box. Find some fun games that your children enjoy and put them into a cheerfully decorated box.

Many kids don’t have much experience playing card games. Rainy days are a perfect time to introduce them to kid’s card games like Go Fish and Memory. It might take kids a few minutes to learn how to play the games, but after mastering them, they will be able to enjoy hours of fun. Board games are another effective way to cultivate critical thinking and a healthy competitive spirit. Today you even can find games that incorporate the themes from beloved children’s stories, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar board game. Make your kid’s rainy days great days with kid’s card games.

monopoly_diceIf you have a new child in your life, you’re probably anxious to run out and spoil the kid with all kinds of toys, games, and treats. And while this desire to purchase an onslaught of gifts is normal, make sure you don’t go overboard with entirely mindless games. Invest in some educational games as well, so that you can play your part in developing this new child’s mental and physical abilities. Make sure, also, that these educational games are appropriate to the child’s age.

With that in mind, consider that very little babies are just developing the most rudimentary of skills. Get games that help them with hand eye coordination or basic visual skills. A little bit older, and the child is starting to learn things like the ABCs and their numbers. Older still, and reasoning skills start coming into play with more complicated board games and card games, such as Monopoly or Stratego. If you’re not sure what level to get, always aim higher than lower. If it’s too advanced, the child can always grow into the game.

daycareFor many parents, there’s nothing harder than having to drop their children off at daycare. Even if you’ve done all your research and know that you’ve left your little one in competent and responsible hands, it’s still hard to go to work knowing your kid isn’t with you. Typically, this is especially difficult for mothers who have recently returned to work after an extended maternity leave. And while it might take time for you to adjust to the emotional difficulties, you can at least make sure in the meantime that the daycare system is the best possible.

Always visit the institution before you choose to leave your kid there. Get to know the staff, and make sure that they are both friendly and experienced in childcare. And don’t forget to make sure that there are plenty of educational toys for your kid to enjoy. Whether he likes sitting and reading or interacting with other kids by playing board games, it’s important that the daycare provides an intellectually and socially stimulating environment. You can also gauge how successful a daycare is by your kid’s reaction. If they seem happy with the daycare, it’s the best evidence possible that it’s the place for them.

SummerCampIf you’re looking for a summer job but want to do something a little more fulfilling than flipping burgers, look into the possibility of becoming a counselor at a summer camp. While some of these positions are strictly on a volunteer basis, others pay a small stipend. But the issue of money will be nothing compared to the idea that you’ll be setting a good example for all those young campers.

If you decide to take this kind of job, make sure that you come prepared with lots of games and activities that you can play with the kids. One great option is brining a cache of board games such as Chutes and Ladders or Monopoly. These fun and interactive games are a great way to build camaraderie and keep the children entertained during slow periods of the day.

family_game_nightFamily toys and games have benefits other than just bringing families together to interact without cell phones, TVs, or computers between them. In addition to learning, many important life skills are an integral part of playing family games-skills such as cooperation, compromise, acceptance of both victory and defeat, being part of a team, patience, and honesty.

New research has begun to reveal that playing family games can help members who have suffered a stroke. Since the strategy used to play family games helps hone the brain’s ability to process information, elderly stroke victims can benefit. They may not be able to remember new information, but familiar family games are often something they can remember and participate in successfully. So be sure that your kid’s toy chest is filled with interactive and engaging toys and games.

Teach Toddlers Early

toddler toysAll parents want the best for their children. Watching children grow up can be such as blessing. All parents know that educating their children early is the best way to prepare them for school. This means purchasing toys that are both fun for kids as well as educational.

Toddler toys need to be sturdy and durable. Parents shouldn’t take the risk of buying toys that toddlers can easily swallow or rip apart and put into their mouths. Make sure the toys you buy for your toddler are age appropriate and educational.
